He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8)
The Micah Summer Fellowship Program is designed to allow current Saint Mary’s College of California undergraduate students the opportunity to experience faith, service, and community in the example of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. This is an immersion living/learning program designed to advance each student’s professional development, leadership development, and growing awareness of important social issues. The Micah Summer Fellows will be positively changed through learning and serving and as a result become agents for positive social change. This program is sponsored and directed by the Catholic Institute for Lasallian Social Action CILSA at Saint Mary’s College of California.
In 2014, 6 students (Ariana Alvarez, Emily Klingenberger, Kaitlin Roth, Lauren Lorge, Lyndsie Dellaria & Rachel Gacerez) will live together at Alameda Point between May 31st and July 27th and serve at 5 distinct non-profit organizations in Alameda, Oakland and San Francisco:
- Alameda Point Collaborative (Emily Klingenberger & Lauren Lorge)
- General Assistance Advocacy Project (Lyndsie Dellaria)
- Prescott Joseph Center for Community Enhancement (Ariana Alvarez)
- St. Anthony Foundation (Kaitlin Roth)
- St. Mary’s Center (Rachel Gacerez)
More on the Micah Summer Fellowship Program…
The values of the program are spirituality, leadership, social justice, community, and simplicity. The students live together in a modest two bedroom, one bath apartment near the West Oakland BART station. Each Micah Fellow receives $15 per week for food and other personal expenses. Students have several readings that critically examine the program values, including Leadership for a Better World. In addition to this blog, students write one critical reflection paper each week and meet with CILSA staff twice per week for community nights. Community nights provide a safe space for students to explore what they’re experiencing and learning.
